The Centre for Experiential Learning at Vancouver Island University is a dedicated hub that supports and promotes experiential learning opportunities for students. Experiential learning refers to hands-on, practical experiences that allow students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings. This can include internships, co-op placements, work-integrated learning (WIL), community-based projects, and other forms of learning that go beyond the traditional classroom environment.

The 2023-2024 report for Vancouver Island University’s Centre for Experiential Learning serves as a comprehensive showcase of the year’s achievements, spotlighting both the institution’s successes and the remarkable accomplishments of its students. This report not only highlights the university's commitment to fostering experiential learning but also underscores the vital role played by local companies and community partners in supporting these initiatives.

The Challenge & Process

During the design of the report, I encountered a couple of significant challenges I faced was creating a layout that was both clean and captivating while maintaining a professional aesthetic. The report was comprehensive, spanning 30 pages and covering a wide range of topics, including Graduate Attributes, WIL Highlights, Career and Employment Highlights, and more. Each section required careful consideration to ensure that the content was presented clearly and engagingly. I had to balance the need for clarity with the desire to create a visually appealing document. I wanted the report to be more than just a standard, text-heavy document; it needed to draw the reader in and hold their attention, especially considering the diverse audience it would reach. However, achieving this without compromising the professionalism expected of an institutional report required a thoughtful approach.

Another challenge was the learning curve associated with using Canva, a tool I was relatively new to. Getting up to speed with Canva's features and functionalities took time, impacting the efficiency of the design process. Despite these obstacles, I worked to adapt and find solutions, ultimately creating a polished and engaging report that effectively communicated the achievements and initiatives.

I worked page by page using VIU’s brand colours to highlight important information and laid out image boxes to get a clean wireframe on each page. Once I had the rough layout, I implemented the imagery and worked through Adobe Photoshop to edit imagery and drop them into Canva. Looking back at the previous years reports, it felt too repetitive and wordy, so I wanted to give it a fresh take and make it brighter with the text spread out for breathing room.
